Casa Brutale: Ambitious Concept Home or Villainous Lair?

Autore:  Stephanie WATSON

If dizzying heights and impossible opulence make your heart skip a beat, Casa Brutale is the concept home for you. We could easily picture the likes of Goldfinger or Dr. No perched behind the brutal glass facade as they contemplate world domination. Indeed, this design by OPA (Open Platform for Architecture) might very well bring out such nefarious desires in even the most innocent.

Casa Brutale is a concrete construction carved directly into a cliff over the Aegean Sea. Above ground, nothing is visible save for a swimming pool and unadorned stairwell that leads to the home. The swimming pool’s glazed glass bottom serves as a massive skylight, letting light filter through to the core of the structure. Laid flush with the cliff’s edge, the building’s only visible facade is also made of floor-to-ceiling glass that frames views of the sea.

Simple materials define the otherwise impressive space: exposed concrete, wood, steel and glass. The neutral pallet places emphasis on the home’s spectacular location as does the layout which consists of an open living area and master bedroom placed on a mezzanine level.

OPA claims that the concept has little impact on the environment due to its small above ground footprint, however we are inclined to wonder about the excavation that would be necessary to bring the project to fruition. Either way, the concept definitely redefines the idea of living on the edge, n’est-ce pas?
